When we first met The Discovery Center, they were using a somewhat disguised approach to racial equity in a nation-wide climate where speaking directly about justice issues was controversial. My, how far we’ve come! Through a process of aligning staff and board, and guiding the organization through the hard work of declaring what they knew was essential, we renamed and reimagined the nonprofit as RE•Center. With a brand in hand, they made the out loud and upfront commitment to address racial inequity in education, specifically. While the work of making daring declarations is scary, it’s inevitable that this group of community leaders would have taken the leap of faith: after years of working directly with our youth and hearing their challenges first-hand, it was just a matter of time before they shifted to the systemic challenges of working on behalf of our youth.
